Kyrgyzstan, a country tucked into the mountains of Central Asia, has fairy-tale scenery, warm-hearted people and an ancient nomadic culture. If you want a different kind of trip, don't miss these five things!
1. Horse riding: be Genghis Khan for a day 🐎
In Taiwan we commute by scooter; in the Kyrgyz countryside, everyone travels on horseback.
Here you have to feel the freedom of riding across the steppe at least once. "The wind bends the grass and reveals the cattle and sheep": in this country, that old poem is a real scene!
Where to go: Song-Kul. At 3,016 m, this alpine lake feels just an arm's length from the sky. Ride around the lake through stunning landscapes where steppe meets mountains. Some trails look steep, but don't worry: horses are stronger and steadier than you'd imagine.
With the wind rushing past your ears, you'll catch yourself imagining you're Genghis Khan on the Central Asian steppe (you really will, haha).
2. Mountains and steppe: breathtakingly grand 🌄
Kyrgyzstan is called the "Switzerland of Central Asia". More than 90% of the country is mountains, with an average altitude of about 2,750 m: there really are mountains and views everywhere.
- Summer: lush green grasslands and herds of cattle and sheep.
- Autumn: changing mountain colors, beautiful as an oil painting.
- Winter: glacier valleys covered in snow.
Here you don't just look at the scenery; you walk into it. Travelers from Dubai come for the snowy peaks and clear mountain springs, while European backpackers take on high trails with big packs, for a deep conversation with nature.
3. Central Asian food × Russian flavors 🍽️
If you're a foodie, congratulations, you've come to the right place! The classics include:
- Mouth-watering charcoal-grilled lamb skewers (shashlik)
- Plov: the Central Asian king of fried rice
- Crispy nan bread
- Samsa, fresh from the oven
- Fresh salads and yogurt drinks of every kind
Must-eat: Beshbarmak. This dish is the pride of Kyrgyzstan. Its name means "five fingers", because people really used to eat it by hand. Handmade noodles are topped with tender, slow-cooked lamb or beef and served with rich onion broth: every bite is deeply satisfying. It's usually only made for celebrations and family gatherings, the most ceremonial dish of all.
What to drink in summer? Fermented mare's milk (kymyz)! Sour and a little fizzy, it's definitely a drink for the brave (ha).
Bonus picks:
- Kuurdak: beef or lamb fried with potatoes, old-fashioned Kyrgyz home cooking.
- Okroshka, Russian cold soup: a base of kvass or kefir with vegetables, light and refreshing in the heat. One sip and you'll love it!
If you're invited to eat at a local home, eat heartily and praise the food: every dish carries a mother's warmth.
4. Melting in local hospitality 💃
In Kyrgyzstan, you'll find yourself melting in people's warmth. Every time you step into their homes, the best food comes to the table along with smiling faces.
Sometimes you won't share a language, but they'll welcome you with songs, dances and gestures. They love to sing and dance, and they're great at joking. Spend some time here and you'll find laughter is the common language.
5. A night in a yurt under the stars ⛺
Finally, you have to live one night of real nomadic life: help put up a yurt, learn to milk a cow, make milk tea, and at night look up at the stars over a steppe with no light pollution. That stillness, and feeling so close to the universe, is like nothing you've experienced before.
Lying on thick wool felt, listening to the wind move through the grass, you'll suddenly understand what "simple is happiness" means.
Final thoughts: a place worth living fully
Kyrgyzstan isn't a famous check-in spot, but it has the most genuine landscapes, the warmest people and the most natural rhythm of life. Here you'll forget the time, put down your phone, and rediscover what life is about.
🌍 If you're ready for a different kind of trip, come to Kyrgyzstan and experience real freedom and simplicity together.
