In Kyrgyzstan, these two lakes are not to be missed! But if your time is limited, should you choose Issyk-Kul or Song-Kul? Here's the simplest way to decide.
🌊 Issyk-Kul: a mountain "beach" you can visit all year
Issyk-Kul means "warm lake" in Kyrgyz. Although it lies high in the mountains, its water doesn't freeze in winter, so you can visit in every season.
✔Location and altitude: eastern Kyrgyzstan, about 1,607 m above sea level; the second-largest mountain lake in the world.
✔Highlights: a huge saltwater lake. You can swim in summer, and the shore has hot springs, beaches, resorts and water sports.
✔Getting there: about 4–5 hours' drive from Bishkek on good roads.
✔Good for: travelers who like an easy trip with both scenery and comfort; great for families and older travelers too.
⛰ Song-Kul: want to experience real nomadic life? Come here!
Song-Kul is hidden on a high plateau in the central Tien Shan. In summer, herders bring their cattle and sheep up to graze, and white yurts dot the grassland: this is the place in Kyrgyzstan closest to how nomadic life has always looked.
✔Location and altitude: central Tien Shan, 3,016 m above sea level.
✔Highlights: a pristine alpine lake that freezes in winter and can only be visited in summer (about June–September). Ride horses, stay in yurts, and watch herds roam everywhere.
✔Getting there: by 4WD or on horseback, about 6–8 hours from Bishkek.
✔Good for: nature lovers who are fine with simple stays and want to immerse themselves in nomadic life.
🎯 So which one should you choose?
👉 An easy holiday + a little adventure = Issyk-Kul 🌴
👉 Immersive nature + nomadic culture = Song-Kul 🐎
Tip: Song-Kul is above 3,000 m, and summer nights are cold too, so bring warm clothes. If you come in winter, Issyk-Kul is your only option.
Of course, if you have time, visit both! Issyk-Kul lets you relax in comfort, Song-Kul gives you a real taste of the wild: two sides of Kyrgyzstan in one trip.
