Mountains, steppe, nomads: the Mongolian Altai and Kyrgyzstan sound much the same? In fact their landscapes and travel experiences are very different. Here are the key differences!
🏔 Landscape and scenery
Mongolian Altai: wilder and more remote. A classic mix of semi-desert and high mountains: dramatic ranges, vast steppe, sand dunes and glaciers, dotted with a few small lakes. With so few people around, you really feel alone between heaven and earth.
Kyrgyzstan: green mountains and grasslands. Alpine lakes like Issyk-Kul and Song-Kul add soft colors to the scenery; the mountains are rounder, and flocks of sheep and herds of horses fill the valleys, like pastures from a fairy tale.
🏕 Travel experience
Mongolian Altai: more of an expedition. There's little infrastructure, and to explore deeply you mostly go by horse, camel or on foot. It's also home to Kazakh eagle hunters, and the Golden Eagle Festival held every autumn in Bayan-Ölgii draws travelers from around the world.
Kyrgyzstan: both easy and deep. Besides hiking, riding and lakeside camping, the travel facilities are better: you can drive right to mountain villages, stay in traditional yurts and even soak in hot springs. Kyrgyzstan also has a living eagle-hunting tradition, and you can meet eagle hunters on the south shore of Issyk-Kul.
🐎 Nature and wildlife
Mongolian Altai: a drier climate, with animals adapted to harsh conditions, such as argali sheep, snow leopards and vultures.
Kyrgyzstan: more water and richer ecosystems: lakes, waterbirds, cattle and sheep on the steppe, wolves, and with luck, even a snow leopard in the high mountains.
🚗 Getting there
Mongolian Altai: a long way to go. You usually fly to Bayan-Ölgii first, then continue by 4WD; some areas can only be reached on horseback or on foot.
Kyrgyzstan: most places can be reached by car from the capital, Bishkek: Issyk-Kul in about 4–5 hours, Song-Kul in about 6–8 hours. You only need a 4WD for the more remote parts of the Tien Shan.
